Field Notes

Description:

The national bird of the United States the Bald Eagle's scientific name literally means "sea eagle with white head." That pretty well describes it. The Northern Bald Eagle is larger than its southern counterpart and can weigh close to 13# and has a wingspan of nearly 8 feet (2.3 meters).

Habitat:

This eagle was photographed in a tree alongside a small river in NW Iowa, USA (385 masl)..

Notes:

They are ranging further south and are now somewhat common in NW Iowa in the rougher terrain. One has to see them to appreciate their size. This is the first I've seen outside of Alaska and the first I've photographed in the wild.
