Field Notes
Description:
Northern puffer. Club shaped ocean puffer. Up to 12" at adulthood. Omni orous fish who strongly prefer fiddler crabs...this one is Martin. I found him washed up in the surf during Hurricane Irma. He was very interactive and intelligent. Formed a strong bond with me and evidenced the emotions if jelousy, anger and love. Martin began exhibiting frustration and discontent as he entered adulthood and jumped from his tank, taking his own life during his 8th month. Puffer fish of this sort can live up to 10 years or more. They are tremendous pets as youngsters but cannot be satiated in captivity as adults.
Habitat:
The northern puffer fish can be found in sure within 5 feet of the shoreline as babies they moved to deeper waters as they grow older and prefer grassy marshy areas for thier feeding grounds. Contrary to the name Northern puffer fish can be found along the Gulf Coast where Martin originated. They are also found from Florida to the Northeast along the Eastern coastline that I know of and maybe indigenous to many other areas.
Notes:
My experience with Martin and the tragedy that was the end result was the catalyst for a puffer fish habilitation program on Pensacola Beach called the Martin Foundation . The Martin Foundation feeds homes and habilitates newborn and infant puffers and reintroduces them to the wild increasing their chances of survival by over 90%.
