Field Notes

Description:

A mole salamander that spends most of its life underground, usually only appearing at the surface during rain. It breeds within vernal pools in forests as permanent bodies of water generally harbor fish which may predate on their larvae. The striking black and yellow coloration of the adults alludes to the toxic substance they produce when provoked.
