Field Notes

Description:

Burrowing species, come on the surface for mating. Local people said that it can only be found from undisturbed soil. The specimen found by my father after ploughing a land which was covered by bamboos ( perished after flowering) for agricultural purposes. Found from IDUKKI district of Kerala state. Due to its appearance often mistaken as balloon frog. Distinguishing feature is its pointed mouth and small eyes. My parents said that they found these frogs many times even before 90s, but now seen very rarely.

Congratulations on this very special find Subin, your Purple Frog has been chosen to illustrate World Frog Day! Many thanks for your interesting notes too! "Today is #WorldFrogDay! Frogs are one of the most endangered groups of animals worldwide, facing multiple threats such as habitat destruction, infectious diseases, pollution and pesticides, climate change, invasive species, and over-harvesting. It has been estimated that about 1/3 of Amphibians (a class that comprises frogs and toads, salamanders, and caecilians) are globally threatened. In this context new species are still being discovered, and we feature a rather special Spotting of the Day for the day with this Purple Frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis), a species endemic to the Western Ghats of India which was only described in its adult stage in 2003. This unusual frog, with its bloated body, small head and pointy snout, is a burrowing species that only surfaces during the monsoon to mate. Classified as Endangered.
