Frogs are one of the most endangered groups of animals worldwide, facing multiple threats such as habitat destruction, infectious diseases, pollution and pesticides, climate change, invasive species, and over-harvesting. It has been estimated that about 1/3 of Amphibians (a class that comprises frogs and toads, salamanders, and caecilians) are globally threatened. In this context new species are still being discovered, and we feature a rather special Spotting of the Day for the day with this Purple Frog (Nasikabatrachus sahyadrensis), a species endemic to the Western Ghats of India which was only described in its adult stage in 2003. This unusual frog, with its bloated body, small head and pointy snout, is a burrowing species that only surfaces during the monsoon to mate. Classified as Endangered.
