Field Notes

Description:

I spotted this large ( 2"?head to tip of abdomen) brown moth resting on the side of my house around noon today.

Habitat:

This moth was resting on the shingles on the side of my house for over an hour.

Notes:

I observed this large brown moth for over an hour, taking many photos of it as it rested. Eventually it flew to a higher spot and I was able to capture a bit of the orange striped underwing. We did leave our exterior light on overnight, perhaps it had been attracted to that. The location is a heavily populated neighborhood on the west end of Portland, Maine. The street is lined with ornamental cherry trees, but there are lots of black walnuts in the area.
