Field Notes

Description:

Nest with 5 juvenile cottontail rabbits (kittens) in my flower garden within the city.

Notes:

Found a cottontail rabbit nest with five kittens in my backyard under an Iris bunch. The mom dug a shallow hole and covered the nest with her fur and dried grass.

Rebecca, you and your dad sound like quite a wonderful team!
That is so precious! When my father plowed the fields way-back-when if he distrubed a nest he would lay down in the field, the little babies would snuggle up to him...he brought them to me and I raised them to set them free....thanks for bringing back such a special memory!
My dog actually found the nest. Yikes! He started carrying it around the yard in his mouth, but I was able to rescue it from him. He hadn't broken the skin and didn't seem to harm it. I released it back at the nest and it crawled back in the hole with the others. I then constructed a 4-foot screen fence to enclose it against an existing chain link fence to protect it from my dog and other predators. They have managed to exist for almost three weeks now and are starting to leave the nest. I've been making the rounds in my yard before I let my dog out to potty.
Have been observing the kittens from my house window. I uploaded a Youtube video of them nursing at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwS4g0NOFpA.
