Field Notes

Description:

11 cm tall. stipe is 5cm long, 0.6cm diameter black hard. Pore surface is 6cm long, 0.9cm diameter at thickest and pointed at top. It is a uniform dark gray with many very tiny pores. The surface is dry, rough and the flesh is very hard. There were at least seven fruiting bodies. Very faint earthy scent.
Interior flesh is white.

Habitat:

Growing in bottom of wooden barrel on ground. The mushroom may have fruited out of soil or out of wood.

Notes:

I do not know the exact species so I will change my ID to Xylaria sp. from Xylaria longipes. From description in Arora, "Mushrooms Demystified" 1986, I think X. longipes is slightly better fit than X. polymorpha.

Cordyceps capitata is possible but the head is usually more defined than this specimen
