Field Notes

Description:

Small grey snake with bright with light brown stripe down the middle of its back and bright orange underbelly. Found in a pile of firewood.

Notes:

Found in firewood thats was under a rubber tarp. Eyes were a bluish color, may have been about to shed.

oh wow I had no idea they were difficult to find. I figured it was some kind of grass snake. In the wood pile where we found this guy was another one (we had seen its head) but we never managed to catch it.
I'm a big fan of Red-bellied Snakes. I agree with Michael 100% about them being difficult to find
The only time I caught one was when I did a herp survey in West Tennessee. First site I went to, 3rd cover object I lifted, and there were two of them. I couldn't believe it.
Really great spotting. The only ones I've ever seen have been roadkill :(
Oh, Just read your notes. The reason the eyes are bluish is because when they shed, there is actually a scale covering their eye that they shed along with their skin.
Very cool! Those are hard to come by, how did you find it? Flipping logs?
