Field Notes

Description:

White tailed deer remains found on a birding trail in the Devil's Millhopper, a massive sinkhole. Pictures include the lower mandible, scapula, leg, some skull fragments, dried skin, and hair.

Habitat:

The Devil's Millhopper has its own microclimate, a bit like a rain forest in the sinkhole itself.

The deer was found on a trail inside of the park but outside the hole.

Notes:

The birding trail started smelling like death many yards before coming across the skeleton. I suspect scavengers scattered its remains all along the foliage surrounding the trail.
