Field Notes

Description:

Adult bear, taking it easy and having some salmon for lunch. Many tourists were watching from a boardwalk just 20 ft away, but the bear ignored them.

I read that female bears like to come to this popular area during the day, when there will be a lot of people around, because the human presence keeps adult male bears away. Male bears are one of the biggest threats to cubs.

Habitat:

Spotted by Steep Creek, near Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau, Alaska.
