Field Notes

Description:

Smooth Sumac. This tree has light green large flower clusters. The flowers are fragrant and nectar-rich and much enjoyed by many insects and small butterflies. The male plant flowers fade away while the female flowers produce fuzzy red fruit and that becomes a staple for birds in winter months.

Habitat:

There were several clusters of these smooth sumac trees throughout our county park fields.
