Field Notes

Description:

Wings and tail striped black and white, underparts barred reddish and pale crescent near wingtips in flight. 16.9–24 in long,37–43.7 in wingspan, weighs 17.1–27.3 oz.

Habitat:

A common forest-dwelling hawk of the East and California, the Red-shouldered Hawk favors woodlands with open understory, especially bottomland hardwoods, riparian areas, and flooded swamps near water. It is perhaps the most vocal American hawk. These hawks eat small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and crayfish.

Notes:

I caught some pictures of three Red-shouldered Hawks up in some tall pine trees in me and my neighbor's yards.
