Asian Open-billed Stork
Anastomus oscitans
22.6985, 88.3839
Field Notes
Description:
Large bird with white wings edged in black.
Habitat:
Overflying my terrace after a spell of rain that left the sky, a very clear blue. These birds are not uncommon but are becoming rarer. Used to see them when driving along the highway or at places where the city limits are...if the area is swampy or marshy. Now the habitats are disappearing as the city advances.
Notes:
You cannot see it because it is flying very high but had it been on the ground you would have seen that there is a gap in the middle after it clsoes the bill. This is an adaptation to crush snails.
