Field Notes

Description:

Large bird with white wings edged in black.

Habitat:

Overflying my terrace after a spell of rain that left the sky, a very clear blue. These birds are not uncommon but are becoming rarer. Used to see them when driving along the highway or at places where the city limits are...if the area is swampy or marshy. Now the habitats are disappearing as the city advances.

Notes:

You cannot see it because it is flying very high but had it been on the ground you would have seen that there is a gap in the middle after it clsoes the bill. This is an adaptation to crush snails.

I understand the feeling. Although I've seen a lot of birds here in Omaha, NE, USA, it doesn't hold a candle to the Amazon jungle. We head back Thursday working our way back to Ecuador over the next week. Glad to see you can feed some birds and so keep in touch even if you can't get out among nature.
Thank you, Tukup. Ever since there has been curbs on movement I find myself staring a lot at the sky...it is such a rush to see a plane go by...and this time it was these storks!
Good catch Sukanya. Thanks for sharing.
