Description:

The female great sooty satyr (spotted here) is brown, with a broad orange band and two large eyespots on both surfaces of the forewing and a pale brown and orange underside.

Habitat:

This butterfly likes grassy and hot places. Found in South Europe, Morocco, Asia Minor, Iran, Kazakhstan, Central Asia , Transbaikal, West China and the Himalayas. Spotted here in an alpine meadow, 1900 m above sea level, in a part of Switzerland where it is quite common.

Notes:

This butterfly shows extreme sexual dimorphism. The male is dark, almost black on both surfaces, with one large eyespot on the underside and two small white points on the upperside forewing.
