Field Notes

Description:

Black caterpillars with red spots and spines. Red feet and white dots.

Habitat:

Feeds on elm, poplar, willow.

Notes:

Although they are defoliators, they will seldom cause mass defoliation. Hey are the larval stage of the mourning cloak butterfly. This is the only butterfly to over winter in Alberta. It can be seen flying in February flitting about looking for food during chinooks.
