Field Notes

Description:

Mid sized bird about the size of a Little Blue Heron or Tricolored Heron 2 – 2.5 feet tall. (61-77cm). However adults are white with black tipped wings and juveniles are brown. They also have a distinctive curved bill. In bayou land they call it a becroche, which means crooked beak in cajun (coon-ass) french.

Habitat:

Gulf Coast Wetlands. Louisiana.

Notes:

I made a comment earlier about seeing hundreds but I didn't actually count them. However these were spotted in the middle of Houma, la in a drainage ditch behind a Walmart that connects to another street they are currently building new businesses on. Note it was a pretty foul smelling drainage ditch. We tend to drain our wetlands and build on them :( But they ended up in the middle of a urban area, feeding and hanging out with their young. I sighted them regularly for about 2 months after the initial sighting.
