Black-bellied Whistling-duck
Dendrocygna autumnalis
29.7719, -90.8092
Field Notes
Description:
Tall duck with Orange bill and legs. Tan head with brown crown and brown body. White in middle of wings with black tips and belly. Can see white in wings better when flying.
8 chicks visible in pic.
Habitat:
Marsh. Wetlands. Ponds. South Louisiana. (Not sure if year round but have seen during breeding months in South Louisiana almost always with chicks.)
Notes:
Also spotted last year in same location (drainage canal at end of street) with about a dozen chicks. Amazing that they continue to breed here with the amount of trash that gets built up at times in the drainage canal. Most recently someone has added a full size trampoline :( However I am thrilled to see she is back this year and successfully breeding.
