Field Notes

Description:

Both adults have greenish thoraxes with black striping, although the examples above are somewhat muted, It may be a younger male. Faces are white and there are light amber patches on the wing. Body and wingspan length varies from 2.5-5 cm (1-2 in). Immatures are browner and I've included a photo of an immature as well.

Habitat:

Breeds in quiet ponds. I found this specimen in an old field above a pond.

Notes:

These insects are migratory along the US east coast, but overwinter in Minnesota as nymphs.
