Field Notes

Description:

3.5cm long, 6cm wingspan. Wings are clear with amber pterstigmata and amber shading close to attachment with body. Eyes are brown. They meet briefly at the top back of head. The eyes continue in wide lobes to back side of head and these sweep forward to meet at the top. The mouth parts are brown and green depending on specimen. The thorax is brown. Abdomen is brown on top with black markings along the sides and a much lighter bottom. In one specimen, the bottom of the abdomen was almost blue (pictured). Abdomen had 7 segments.

Habitat:

Bottom and top of Que'Appelle Valley. These were copious on and flying along the grid roads at top of Valley.

Notes:

I am pretty sure of the classification to family Libellulidae but I could not get the ID more specifically.
