Field Notes

Description:

These vines are plentiful in SC forests, typically scaling trees well out of sight or as groups of seedlings creeping along on the ground until they find a support to climb. In this area, green and ripening fruit will fall to the forest floor in July, and increasingly mature specimens continue to fall through at least September. If you find grapes but can't see a vine, any visible leaves for identification are probably up in the tree canopy.

These grapes are edible, but whether or not you'll appreciate the taste is a matter of personal opinion.

Habitat:

Mixed temperate forest.

Notes:

Once you see one, you'll see a hundred.
