Field Notes

Description:

Fritillaries are at a peak time in my area right now, especially Argynnis aglaja, niobe and adippe, which can be tricky to differentiate. Based on a brief view of the underwings (sorry no pic) this is aglaja. See the link below for more details on how to differentiate these 3 species:
http://www.eurobutterflies.com/species_pages/adippe.htm

Habitat:

Open areas of grass and herbs. Found here in a forest meadow. The flower is Knautia arvensis, the field scabious. Widespread across Europe from southern Spain to central Scandinavia.
