Description:
It is large enough to be a hummingbird but its actually a moth. Amazing!! It flew right around me like I wasn't there and proceeded to drink nectar from the wildflowers on the trail. It has an olive-green backside, possible maroon wings with translucent panels between wing veins, white underside, has 4 black rings from the abdomen to the tail. It looked like a beautiful and colorful crayfish the way the tail bobbed under as it hovered along the flowers.
Habitat:
Mainly hardwood habitat with wildflowers along the trail of the extreme Southside of the Aucilla WMA, in Wakulla County, Fl.
Notes:
I spent the day on a field trip with the Hairstreak Chapter of the North American Butterfly Association. Spotted 10 new species and learned a lot from the experts.
