Field Notes

Description:

Medium-sized woodpecker with black bars on their backs and a red cap.

Habitat:

These two were in a tree at the Greene Valley Forest Preserve in Lisle, IL.

Notes:

Is the one on the left a juvenile?
The photo quality is bad...they were far away and up high in the tree and my 300 mm could only reach so far. :)

Thanks for the tips, Heather. I'm going to look into that this weekend. Thanks for the kind words, Atul! :)
nice pics claudia very nice birds
If you really want to see them up close, and other birds as well, put a platform feeder out with some bait bugs on it or blueberries. Blueberries seem to attract every living thing in the area. Meal worms, and any other "bait" critter. Also, black sunflower seeds seem to be very popular in my yard as well.
Yes, they are gorgeous. I was very excited to spot them...just wish they weren't so far away so I could have gotten some sharper images.
And these were the first I have ever seen. :)
This is the 3rd, well 3rd and 4th Red Bellied Woodpecker today. Awesome!
