Field Notes

Description:

Mottled reddish brown to tan. Variable markings from nearly uniform color to many dark spots outlined in white or with numerous white line markings, occasionally some yellowish areas on back. Unicorn-like projection is quite variable in length. Older individuals have the shortest projections.

Habitat:

Inhabit sand, mud and rocky bottoms; occasionally found near reefs. Rest on bottom and usually partly cover themselves with sand or mud.

Notes:

These fish apparently rely on camouflage and do not move unless molested.
