Field Notes

Description:

This was in a window frame - it looks like a nest of green grasshoppers that was put in an unfortunate location - along the track of where the screen slides up and down. Very odd because all the grasshoppers appear the same size and all found dead. There was a white cocoon under all the strawlike material gathered in the track for the screen on the right side of the photos. Is this what a "grasshopper nest" would appear like?

Habitat:

Suburban window frame.

Hello again - I just found some info - they are dead "tree crickets", planted in the window frame by "grass carrier wasps" (!) The female wasps lay eggs and their larvae feeds on the light green tree crickets. Yick. This was explained at the following Iowa State University site: www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/iiin/node/144
These exact same light green grasshoppery looking bugs were in our windows, too - (Madison CT) I found them several years ago & since, check periodically. Very odd - it's as if they're incubating like pod people, and that same hay-like brown gqass comes tumbling out each time I discover these creepy things. Can't figure out how they get into such a skinny crevice. Windows & screens aren't old, either... Don't like them one bit - creepy!
