Field Notes

Description:

This butterfly was spotted on some lantana in a garden store. Identification was made via the two large eyespots on the underside of the wings. THe butterfly was slowly flapping them up and down (for balance, I suppose), so both views were available.

Habitat:

Widespread in North America. Spotted in the coastal tropical south. This garden center buys from a more rural flower farm which may help to explain this spotting. Still, we are nowhere near the mountains where this butterfly is expected to be found.
