Field Notes

Description:

The low growing 6inches or less sea plant was mounded in spots. It is not Sea Oats. The little black birds looked like they were hunting insects and possibly small crabs that hide in the sand in between the tide lines. The tide was in when I spotted the birds. They were also pecking in the sea grass that washed in with the tide.

Habitat:

This series was taken on the leeward side of the inlet to the Destin Harbor. This is the protected side of the sand dunes. I saw two little black birds at the water's edge. It is still salt water and it is very shallow for a few feet then deepens to harbor depth. If you look at the map, the water is a different color in the Harbor because there are tides, but not as strong of currents and less wind in the harbor, than in the Destin Pass and open Ocean.

Notes:

Thanks for the ID help, 1Sarah2.

I did not, because we were on a fishing boat returning to dock. I might get back out there tomorrow if it stops raining.
Did you get close enough to get closeups of the plants. I am especially interested in any flowers. The bird could be a grackle. Check out additional pictures at http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/6827195
