Pallas’s Long-tongued Bat (possible)
Glossophaga aff soricina
9.94551, -84.0814
Field Notes
Description:
Relatively small bat, I estimate 6 cm body, and about 15 cm wingspan.
It is common in the area, but it is not seen frequently, as it depends on the fruits or flowers that regularly visit, such as banana, Acnistus arborescens fruits (the neighbors have a tree that fruit regularly but it is more difficult to take the photo).
These bats are seen almost all over the country from sea level to altitudes of 1500 meters above sea level.
in forest areas they feed on Cecropia sp, Piper sp, Mucuna sp Philoderon sp.
Habitat:
They live in gallery forests, dry forests, humid forests, and in banana plantations, gardens close to cities
Notes:
Pictures taken at home, just 1 mile from San Jose downtown
In banana plantation they are consider a pest as they cause damage to the fruits that they scratch with their nails, which makes the fruit ineligible for export.
