I saw this large green grasshopper in a zoo in Sydney a few years ago - I don't think it is native to Australia. I know it looks plastic, but I watched it climb! Any suggestions?

you're right Steve.. stick insect (megacrania batesii).. according to wikipedia: the species occurs in Queensland, as well as several islands in the Pacific Ocean, for example the Solomon Islands, Ambon Island, New Guinea, the New Hebrides and the Philippines... so that areas are near/close with the New South Wales, Australia... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megacrania_batesii
I looked on Google - Maybe a peppermint Stick Insect (Megacrania batesii)?
I believe, they include to the members of the family Diapheromera (STICK INSECTS - order Phasmatodea) ..
