Field Notes

Description:

last campsite in Kings Canyon was covered in these red inflorescences.

Habitat:

pushing up through a few inches of pine needles, these tall red stalks were usually found under trees in the shade. This is because the flowers are parasites of the fungi attached to the roots of the trees.

Notes:

lack of chlorophyll, myco-parasitic.

Very cool! This is also known as Snow Plant or Snow Flower. I had never heard of these before seeing them on Noah.
