Field Notes

Habitat:

Sandy soil. Ash, maple and black cherry dominated woodlot.

Notes:

From the Michigan Flora website: "Forms with the petals variegated with green are not uncommon and are sometimes locally abundant. In extreme cases, parts of the flower are sometimes changed toward more leaf-like states, and are sometimes multiplied in number. Petioled leaves often occur on plants with abnormal flowers. Most of these variants result from a mycoplasma-like infection; the disease spreads and plants die after several years."
