Cortinar Mushroom
Cortinarius sp.
41.6192, -73.4296
Field Notes
Description:
The cap was 4cm diameter and the mushroom was about 5cm tall. The cap was tan/cream colored. The base had some lavender/brown coloring. Flesh was lavender. It was still in the button stage and the cap hadn’t opened up yet, but when I sliced it in half, I saw gorgeous purple gills with the cobweb-like veil. When the cap finally expands, the threads will stick to the stem, where the spores will color the threads reddish-brown.
Habitat:
Growing on the ground in a deciduous forest. There were several of these mushrooms growing in the area – all in this stage.
