Field Notes

Description:

Adults are about 4.75 cm (1.75 in) in length. Immature males and females are brilliant green with black chevrons on the tail, as shown above. The bodies of adult males become pruinose as they mature turning them a powder-blue color. See http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/5403647 for a photo I took of an adult male.

Habitat:

I find these insects along lakes and rivers. This one was in an upland area near a pond.

Notes:

These dragonflies are among our most ferocious insect predators. They will go after insects as large as themselves, even other pondhawks! I believe they are among our most handsome dragonflies.
