Field Notes

Description:

Gray-and-brown cottontail rabbits with some white fur markings around face and -- of course -- the underside of their tails. One adult and one juvenile.

Habitat:

They were sitting at twilight on a mowed grass lawn near heavy tree and underbrush cover near a pond at our country club in a suburban neighborhood. When I got to within a certain distance, the juvenile took cover in the underbrush near the pond. The adult sat until I was even closer then took cover in the underbrush on the other side of the clearing.
