Field Notes
Description:
A bird of prey and the national bird of the United States of America. Majestic creatures that are alway a thrill to see and fascinating to watch. Adults have brown feathers and a white head and tail. They are large birds...close to 3 feet tall with a wingspan ranging from 70 - 90+ inches.
Habitat:
I find most of them near rivers and lockes and dams where it's easy to catch fish in the winter. They build their nests high up in the trees and I have seen some massive nests. Heard once that one of their nests weighed 1200 pounds!
Notes:
Took a trip to Lock 14 along the Mississippi river in January 2011 and had the opportunity to see close to one hundred of these marvelous birds.
