I'll have to try the sock then. The squirrels ate a thin metal feeder once.
My 3rd floor balconcy was within the canopy of the tree & it had one resident squirrel which I named Rocky. He performed some awesome gymnastics to get to each of my bird feeders but he did not eat through the sock. He is posted elsewhere on the site as Squirrel,
