It could be a carpenter bee, but there are bumble bees with black on their abdomen too (like Bombus impatiens). It is more a matter of whether the black is a shiny, fairly hairless abdomen (carpenter bee) or if it is hairy (bumble). The general appearance of this bee makes me think it is a bumble bee rather than a carpenter bee, but admittedly I'm not 100% certain of that ID.

@Kristal, could it be a carpenter bee? The second photo clearly shows a black abdomen.
