Field Notes
Description:
Tropinota squalida is a beetle of the cetonidae family, one of the families in which the beetles are subdivided. It resembles Oxythyrea funesta; both are round 1 cm beetles, common, black with some white spots on the elytra and with light hairiness. Tropinota squalida is distinguished by its more rounded body shape, although with more prominent elytra projections and central suture and more marked shoulders.
Habitat:
It feeds on wild flowers like Dandelion.
Notes:
The soft, white larvae of Tropinota squalida feed on roots, while the adults eat pollen from the flowers. Both larvae and adults can cause problems in crops.
