Habitat:

northern canada temperate forest

Notes:

I spotted a few of these butterflies while hiking around Algonquin provincial park. It's not in the Audobon guide to insects and spiders. I also have some good sites for IDing butterflies, but have no idea where to start with this one.

Dan, I'm wondering if this isn't an intergrade between a red-spotted purple and a white admiral. The underside of the wing in the third photo looks a lot like a white admiral, but the top of the wing looks like something halfway between the two. See http://bugguide.net/node/view/39878. There appears to be a lot of variation among these intergrades.
