Spotted Salamander
Ambystoma maculatum
33.992, -84.3253
Field Notes
Description:
~ 20 cm (7.5 in)!! I'd love to know how old this salamander is! Spotted in Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, GA in a very urban neighborhood.
Habitat:
The spotted salamander can be found in hardwood forests and swamps where it burrows near water. For breeding, it requires temporary pools or wetlands, and avoids deeper water where fish can prey on its eggs or larvae.
Notes:
The spotted salamander is about 15–25 cm (5.9–9.8 in) long. Most spotted salamanders (more than 90%) die before they transform and leave their pond, either because their pond dries up, or they are killed by predators or disease. If they do survive and make it out of the pond, they typically live about 20 years in the wild, though some have been reported as old as 30.
