Description:

Small snake spotted in Chattahoochee National Recreation Area, GA. These little snakes only grow to a maximum size of about 30 cm (12 in).

Habitat:

Spotted basking on a heavily used gravel hiking trail in Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Atlanta, GA

Yea, the underside is bright red. I added a photo of the belly... I didn't realize I left that picture out.
It's good that your hand is in there...I would have assumed a much bigger snake.
