Field Notes

Description:

This frog (or toad) was found in our bathroom. My dog had been barking and scratching it and nearly got killed with the poisonous translucent goo oozing from its body. It had webbed hind feet. The skin was very coarse.

Habitat:

Never seen here before.

Notes:

It was wet at night when we found it. It was unusually big for the size of frogs we have here. I left it in the kitchen garden to save it from my dog. In the morning I saw it crawling towards the shade when the sun had come up. It kept looking for shade all day. It had become dry. So I puored a mug of water over it. It must have been 3.30 pm. After some time I went to see it again at around 5 pm and sadly found it dead.

It was the size of a grown up's hand. Really a giant for the place where it was found.
:) It was innocent. It was only trying to defend itself from my dog. It had all the right to live. I just didn't know how to help it live.
Really touched by the effort you went through to save it even though it endangered your dog. And by your curiosity about it!
Thanks for help. I have never seen a cane toad here around. Nor have my friends. It does look like a Bufo or a cane toad. Our friend here resembles one on this site at http://flatrock.org.nz/topics/animals/unwanted_amphibian.htm . Same skin, same size. But the one on this site has big bulges behind the eyes. Could be a cane toad. But what species?
Have cane toads been introduced there? And there is a native relative to the cane toad, the black-spined toad.
Maybe a species of Bufo. I've heard they can kill a dog. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bufo
