Yes, they aren't harmed by the nets, and they readily fly off at the first opportunity.

Haha, no I can't imagine they would be, handling a grosbeak is challenging enough (they have really strong beaks and like to remind you of that given the chance!)
Nice photo! I did "Hawk Watch" a few time while in Acadia National Park in Maine! Obviously migratory raptors are not for close up opportunities!
Yes, it was. We caught him during the spring migration monitoring (like most of my other bird photos). If you live near a bird observatory you try to get out to volunteer in the spring, and many observatories do fall migration monitoring as well. It's a great experience!
I am starting to envy your position to be able to get every little one to photo it. If only I am that lucky!!
