Field Notes

Description:

Generally black with white streaks on the wing feathers. The beak is red or red and brown.

Habitat:

Swampy areas where there is plenty of vegetation and bright daylight. They like to nest under thickets and feed on nearby streams or ponds.

Notes:

The hen may have from one to five black chicks. They are easily startled by approaching humans and traffic noises. They feed at 7 or eight a.m.
