Hippopotamus
Hippopotamus amphibius
-23.8214, 31.4456
Field Notes
Description:
The hippopotamus is semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers, lakes and West African mangrove swamps [3] where territorial bulls preside over a stretch of river and groups of 5 to 30 females and young. During the day they remain cool by staying in the water or mud; reproduction and childbirth both occur in water. They emerge at dusk to graze on grass- We were warned when we took vacation at St Lucia aquatic park near Mozambique to be wary of these at dusk due to having killed people there.
