Field Notes

Description:

A bush that is often not planted but springs up in your yard or garden. Leaves are rough and dull and berries when ripe are blue-lavender. the Mockingbirds particularly like them in the winter when there is less to eat.

Habitat:

Likely spread by bird droppings. These berries I saw at the school in Nokomis, but I have many just like them at home.

Notes:

They are a bit hard to keep under control if you have limited space, but if I trim them I always leave some branches with berries for the birds.
