Part shade in warm to hot climate with regular watering

Wow! I had no idea this was asparagus. The plant was here when we bought the property 7 years ago. Thank you for the id and info Scott!
That's some sort of asparagus. The USDA lists a couple of species that are introduced in CA. Was this "wild" or was it planted? There's an Indian Ayurvedic medicinal species, A. racemosus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asparagus_racemosus) which is very similar to your photos, but isn't likely to be found just growing in California.
