Habitat:
This Lynx Spider was spotted in our backyard vegetable plot, on String Beans (Vigna unguiculata L.). In the Philippines, String Beans are called Sitaw. Plant information is from http://www.stuartxchange.org/Sitaw.....
Notes:
Oxyopidae; Oxyopes javanus Thorell, 1887. I am sure that anyone, who has tried to identify a spider, has come across long lists of species. These lists usually show the species names with the authors' names neatly attached and they look just fine, until you start working your way down the list, to find out which, if any of them are present in your part of the world. Then you realize the extent of the problem. There are approximately 300 species in the Genus Oxyopes and that could be a massive problem. However, Wiki's list is presented, complete with distribution details, for every single species. So, I quickly found the following seven, listed as present in the Philippines ; O. aspirasi, O. concolor, O. delmonteensis, O.javanus, O. lineatipes, O. matiensis and O. pingasus. Then all I had to do was find matches for the seven of them and identify the one that looked like my picture. That was "a piece of cake", compared to working my way down a list of 300 spiders. So, my spider is definately Oxyopes javanus and it is present in the Philippines. My thanks go out to the author of Wiki's article.
