Field Notes

Description:

about 2" tall, thinner than a pencil. Maybe a type of coral fungus.

Habitat:

temperate forest, dead deciduous tree

Notes:

I spotted these in Algonquin. Some types of fungi were very abundant but I only saw 2 dead trees with this fungus.

I thought this might have been an early stage of "Dead Man's Fingers". I had the genus (possibly) right, just not the species. Take a look at Xylaria hypoxylon, Antler Fungus: http://www.messiah.edu/Oakes/fungi_on_wood/club%20and%20coral/species%20pages/Xylaria%20hypoxylon.htm. Figure 2 at that link looks a lot like your photos.
