Field Notes

Description:

This a follow up on a previous spotting of a ruddy shelduck outside of its normal distribution range. The duck is still at the same open Swiss pond a year later (I am assuming it's the same animal). This time it was spotted with a mate. The last Swiss census for this bird recorded only 15-25 breeding pairs.

Habitat:

Normal distribution range for this species is from south east Europe across central Asia to southeast China.

Notes:

Photographed on a dark day with the rain pouring down, hence the use of flash light.

These ducks look so cute!!
this duck also called Brahminy Duck breeds in high altitude lakes and swamps in Jammu & Kashmir i have never seen them but i have the lesser whistling variety more commonly seen
Thanks Atul. The weather was atrocious and there was really only me and the ducks out there! Have you seen this duck in India? It is more at home in your country than in mine... Wikipedia has some nice notes about its symbolism in Indian literature.
